In the article, Cal found that the speech was full of "lies and distortions". He believed that the best way for energy independence ws less consumption. He disagreed with the fact that Bush wanted to move away from the Middle East oil. He said that consumption wouldn't go down until gas reaches 4 dollars a gallon. He didn't like Bush's proposal to spend more money on education. I agree with the fact that American's are consuming to much. I don't really think gas prices should go up to 4 dollars though. I feel that the State of the Union Address had some good points but some bad points also. I wanted Bush to spend a little more time talking about Hurricane Katrina.

Virginia approves gay marriage ban

I do not believe that Virginia is doing the right thing. Gay marriage should be legal regardless of the "man and woman" mentality that seems to be shown in the government. All people are equal and therefore there should be no ban that denies the right of marriage to gay couples. I believe that this is similar to African-Americans getting denied the rights of whites in the past. It is not right and they should have the right to marriage.

Alito Hearings

The Alito hearings have been pretty intense thus far. Alito has recently stirred controversy with accusations that he was a member of a Princeton group who is rumored to be against minorities and women from entering the university. Alito's wife was seen crying during the Alito trials. I believe that it is necessary to find the truth about this rumor because it is an important issue.

Bush New Immigrant Policy

The President's new policy is outlined by a plan to help more immigrants find work legally in America. There was a big scare of terrorists slipping into the U.S. after 9/11. Bush believes that America should be a welcoming society. Many conservatives and liberals are both angry at the policy because it helps immigration. I am not really sure what to think at this point, but I feel like we need to get immigrants to work legally if they are in the U.S.

Detainee Policy

Torture of detainees is a big problem at the moment. We should follow the law and conduct of questioning. Torture does not solve anything and it makes us just as bad. Bush claims that there is no torture involved but this is definetly a big problem. There have been many cases recently and the issue is hot.

Kaine wins

I am very excited about Kaine's victory in the past week. I think he will do a much better job as Governor than Kilgore. I believe that he has what it takes to do a good job. People in Charlottesville voted mainly for Kaine but if you step right outside in the county than it was Kilgore. I like what Kaine wants to do with Virginia and I hope everything goes well.

Scooter Indictment

This is a very confusing situation. Why does he think he has done nothing wrong but the rest of the Government and world is going into a frenzy? He was even questioned extensively and is being indicted on perjury, false statement, and obstruction of justice charges. This is all due to the connection with the leaking of a CIA officer's identity. All of these things are hurting Bush right now and his approval rating is finally at an all time low. I think people are finally understanding what exactly is going on in the Bush Administration. This is also hurting Cheney.

Debate..

Last night's gubernatorial debate seemed to have both canidates hootin' and hollerin' at one another. Tim Kaine and Jerry Kilgore both accused one another of making up stuff and stating lies. Kilgore seemed a little more nervous while Kaine was pretty composed but his eyebrow and face did strange things. He used his hands while talking and made gestures while Kilgore was more upright. Kaine talked about being Catholic and his religion when asked about the death penalty and abortion. Kilgore discussed how he favored the death penalty but avoided answering whether he would sign the abortion proposal if he was elected. I thought the debate was fairly boring and there wasn't really a "debate".

Response To Hurricane Katrina

It seems as if Hurricane relief is not coming fast enough. People are dying and the Federal Government is not making moves. Yes there is relief, but there has to be more. I also believe that this is a national crisis and the whole country is affected. Athletes, celebrities, and people from all over the world are sending money and donating to the relief efforts. There are fundraisers and benefits that are being organized to help out. I even donated my last pay check from work to the Red Cross. People need to come together and give in a time like this. I see lots of people helping out and it is important.

1. Research the impact of Hurricane Katrina on gasoline prices. Why did it cause an increase in gas prices? What are some problems that this increase may cause? What are some things that are being done to control costs?

Gas prices increased because major pipelines that were connected to Louisianna were shut down after the storm. There could possibly be panic buying due to Hurrican Katrina and not everybody will be able to get gas. The prices are getting so high that many people are just buying regular gas and those pumps are being shut off. Prices could continue to soar throughout the coming months. There is a fear of a recession such as that in 1973 and 1979. The International Energy Agency has offered to sell over 2 million barrels of crude oil. President Bush has also announced the Energy Department is approving loans from the SPR.

2. Research current gasoline prices across the country. Write a summary on why some states or areas have higher gasoline prices than others. Think about the area's location and population, does that affect their gasoline prices? Include current prices in your explanation.

In Atlanta, Georgia, gas prices have rose to 5.87 in some areas. This increase is blamed on panic buying. Gas in Texas has reached a high of 3.29 and California has a high of 3.49. An area’s location and population have an affect on their gasoline prices. Some areas have higher gasoline prices than others because of how they are able to get gas. It may cost more to ship in one area and there are different pipelines that affect the price. The areas that were affected by Hurricane Katrina will have gas costs increase. Even areas that were not directly affected by the Hurricane will be inderectly hurt. The East Coast pipelines connect to Louisianna pipelines and many have been shut off since the storm. Virginia has a low price of 2.81 while having a high of 3.89.

3. Describe the changes in gasoline prices in the last fifty years.

Gas prices really havent changed all that much over the last fifty years. They basically have hovered around $1.50 for the last fifty years, once inflation has been added to the equation. However, during the late seventies and early eighties, prices spiked similary to how they have recently.

4. Compare gas prices around the world. Do certain regions have lower prices than others? Which countries have the highest prices and which have the lowest? How does the current prices in the United States compare to the rest of the world?

The price of gasoline differs greatly around the world. It seems to be the highest all over Europe hovering around 5 dollars a gallon. It is the highest in the United Kingdom at $5.64 a gallon. The places where gas is the lowest are places that produce huge amounts of oil, like the former Russian satellites, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, as well as Venezuela, which boasts a world low of 14 cents a gallon. So, concidering this range of prices we really shouldn’t be too angry about the sudden increase of three dollars a gallon.

My Private Idaho

It amazes me that Bush has spent 339 days at his ranch since he took office. Yes everybody deserves a little vacation from time to time, but not almost a full year out of the 5 years he has been in office. It seems as if his real vacation is when he is at the White House. I liked the article because it stated the facts and made some interesting comments. I know that the stress level is extremely high for him right now, but as President, one should know that it isn't a walk in the park before taking office. I also do realize that while Bush is away, he is not "really" on vacation. He is still doing things around the country and making moves. Bush is still doing politcal things even if they are done poorly. I am fine with the fact that he leaves on a vacation from time to time, but I just don't want it to become a habit that continues to get media attention. We have enough things to worry about in the world right now and we should really focus on something more important.

I find it interesting that Suge Knight just can't seem to stay out of the news. He continues to be in headlines for violence or other related "incidents". I am curious about what exactly led up to the shooting and why it took place. Suge has been in the news over the years for his trouble with the law and the conspiracy behind the deaths of the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.
